Seeking Female Hitchhikers!

I’m writing a book about female* hitch-hikers. I’m looking for women (or people who are read as female by drivers) who have hitch-hiked in some broad geographical areas, to share information about specific tips for those areas. I’m also looking for some people to feature in the ‘Inspiring Women’ pages of the book. Maybe you would like to help, or want to recommend someone else?

The geographical areas I’m looking for are:

  • North America

  • Central and South America

  • Russia and the Post-Soviet World

  • Africa

  • The Indian Subcontinent

  • Central Asia

  • East Asia

  • South-East Asia

  • Australia and New Zealand

But I’m also interested in hearing about any particularly inspiring female* hitch-hikers. I will be happy to promote blogs or other projects you are working on.

*I realise the wording of ‘female’ isn’t all-inclusive. I want this project to be open to trans, non-binary, genderqueer and undefined gender hitchhikers. The wording is a work in process.

  1. Hi! Well; I’m a hitchhiker woman… I would love to write more about it but I ussually go from living one story to another without many time to seat… I hh some places in South America (Argentina and Bolivia mostly) and many in central america, Western Europe and Moroko. Most of time I was hitchhiking alone. I’m planning/wishing to go around hh in the Balcans, India and West Afrika in the next few years.

  2. I hitchhiked in Australia for a while – and am doing a hitching race in two weeks from Germany to Macedonia
If you are still collecting stories, please let me know and I will think of something…
Charly (and yes, I am female)

  3. I’m a female hitchhiker! I traveled all around Eastern Europe and turkey by myself via hitchhiking and it was incredible! I began to write a bit about it on my blog and would love to write more!

  4. Yes yes yes! What a fabulous idea. I’ve been on the road for 3 years now US, Mexico & Israel/Palestine. I leave for Europe in 2 weeks. Solidarity to all my cis&trans sisters out there!!

  5. Thanks to everyone who has contacted me so far. I’ve had an overwhelming response of more than 50 female hitchhikers!

Hopefully I have replied to everyone that messaged me through this page now. I need to work out which information I have and what I need more of. Thanks again for all your support, I’ll be in touch.

  6. Hi Jo,

I just sent you a message about seeking contributors for my hitchhiking anthology… and I’d love to write for yours! I spent six weeks last summer thumbing through Mexico with a friend of mine. Let me know if you want to know more :) All the best!

  7. Hi there! I am currently living and working in Guadeloupe and have spent the last 4 months without a car, as hitchiking is way to easy and way to fun. It has been the best way to meet new and interesting people and for unlimited french lessons! I have a lot of tales and came across your blogs in the hope to start one myself!
    Please get in touch!

  8. I’m a female hitch hiker. I’ve hitched a lot in Africa but also some in Asia, Caribbean, micronesia, Central America and the US. I started to write a book a couple years ago and I’m probably 1/3 of the way finished but I’ve been distracted lately. Maybe helping with your project would re- inspire me to write.

  9. Hey! It definitely seems like you have received plenty of offers for contributions, but if you are still looking for stories, let me know :) I’ve spent a lot of time hitchhiking all over Europe and Central America, and definitely have quite a few of the. Some of my absolutely best memories are sharing the experience with people who have never tried doing so before…its the most beautiful feeling to watch other people open themselves to the world and have their faith in humanity restored a little bit, and your project of sharing peoples experiences with others is such a great way to do so. Thanks for your work!

  10. Hi Jo,
A friend of mine from Galway (Tara) just sent me over to your blog, and I can’t wait to dig in and read more!
Just another female HH saying hi! A few months ago was my first solo HH trip, from Bucharest to Athens, and it was great.
    Peace out and adventure on!

  12. Hi Jo!

I’m another hh woman here. I’ve hitchhiked solo around England, Spain, won the Scottish Hitchhiking Race of 2014 together with a friend and I’m currently traveling alone around South America. I’ve hitchhiked most of the coast of Brazil and I’ll soon head to Uruguay :)

Let me know if you need any infos or help!

    • Hi Marsha, it’s really nice to hear from you. I’m hoping to get back to writing my book again later in the year so will be in touch with you then if I can find some space to squeeze you in. I’ve finished the research really, but your story sounds really cool :)
